Many Mithric temples were also built in Rome and throughout the empire. The emperor Aurelian (270-275), whose mother was a priestess of the sun, made this solar cult the official religion of the empire. His biographer, Flavius Vopiscus, tells us that the priests of the Temple of the Sun were called “Pontiffs.” They were priests of their dying-rising savior, Mithra, and reigned as his vicegerents. Under Emperor Antoninus Pius, Mithra was by official decree entitled “Sol Dominus Imperil Romani” (“The Sun, the Lord of the Roman Empire”). By the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine (273 to 337 AD) Sun worship had become the largest pagan cult within the Empire.
Emperor Constantine influenced and had a more profound altering effect upon the Christian Church than any other person in history. Original Judaic-Christianity that started in Jerusalem around 33 or 34 AD had very little in common with the later hybrid monster that Constantine helped to create and promote. We must study this man in order to understand how why when where and by who did these many changes come to Christianity. Many today have been tricked into believing that Constantine was a devout Christian a defender of the Faith. However nothing could be farther from the truth. While he claimed to be a “Christian” he engaged in the following. This man according to history was a habitual liar murder and an idol sun god worshipper. He even went so far to set up colossal images of himself to be worshipped. He put his image along side of that of his sun god on the imperial coinage. And he even ordered all of his imperial troops to have a weekly sunrise service a worship service to the sun god. All troops were under order by Constantine to face the rising sun and offer prayers to this false deity. Pagan ritual had required that they face the sun in a sunrise service. They would as a part of the ancient ritual kiss and raise their hand to the sun as recorded in the book of Job 31:26-28.
Job 31:26-28 “If I beheld the sun when it shined, or the moon walking in brightness; And my heart hath been secretly enticed, or my mouth hath kissed my hand: This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judge: for I should have denied the God that is above.”
History of Rome, by Victor Duruy Vol. 7, page 489. “He (Constantine) sent to the legions, to be recited upon that day a form of prayer which could have been employed by a worshiper of Mithra, of Serapis, or of Apollo, quite as well as by a (Apostate) Christian believer. This was the official sanction of the old custom of addressing a prayer to the rising sun.”
This is the same ancient solar idolatry and what God called an “abomination” that was reveled to the Prophet Ezekiel in a vision that Israel was secretly committing.
Ezekiel 8:15-16 “Then said he unto me, Hast thou seen this, O son of man? Turn thee yet again, and thou shalt see greater abominations than these. And he brought me into the inner court of the LORD’S house, and, behold, at the door of the temple of the LORD, between the porch and the alter, were about five and twenty men, with their backs toward the temple of the LORD, and their faces toward the east; and they worshipped the sun toward the east.”
