COMMUNITY SERVICE
SADD
This year Southland Boys’ High School created a Students Against Dangerous Driving (SADD) Commi ee led by Brayden Ward, Daniel Cocker and Mar n Cole. This was the  rst ever SADD commi ee at Southland Boys’ High School. SADD
is a na on-wide organisa on that empowers young people to make safer
and be er choices on the road and works in coopera on with school commi ees
to ensure that the message spreads. The chairman of the SBHS commi ee for 2018 was Brayden Ward who a ended the 2018 South Island conference in Dunedin. At the conference, the student representa ves learnt about road safety, sta s cs and how they can best target young people and help save lives. The SADD commi ee at SBHS worked with Katherine Blake from SADD NZ who gave us posters to put up around the school. We created the new house  lm compe  on with the theme for the  lms needing to encourage safe driving. The

SADD representa ves for SBHS in 2019 are Kapila Tohiariki and Brayden Thomas.
The Environment
In 2018, as environment prefect working with Miss Petelo and Miss Cross, we organised a weeding group at Thomson’s Bush to help  dy up the area and give back to the community. This was in coopera on with the Year 7 and 8 Science Club and several senior students who would travel
down to Thomson’s Bush each Wednesday a erschool to do weeding for a couple of hours. Our group grew throughout the year as more boys decided that they wanted to give back to the community, whilst doing service to the school which was great to see.
Organising this programmme for SBHS involved many mee ngs with the Invercargill City Council Parks Department and Environment Southland to do the planning and health and safety work. It was hoped that a possum, rat and stoat trapping group would also start at Thomson’s Bush, run by senior students, however there
