is a lot more planning required for this. It is hoped that this programme will start in the next few years. SBHS has secured over 100 traps to use at Thomson’s Bush from the Omaui Land Care group who are lending their old traps to other pest control groups.
Special thanks to Miss Petelo and Miss Cross for all the hard work they put in this year with leading the group and planning this project.
In Term 3, the prefects helped Plunket by fundraising outside Windsor New World for the day. This was a great way to give back to an organisa on that helped many of us when we were younger and con nues to help many families across New Zealand. It was also a great opportunity to talk to members of the community.

Fundraiser: Kakapo Recovery Programme
A er previously sponsoring an injured young Orangutan named Peanut, following a school trip to Borneo a few years ago, the school decided to sponsor a species much closer to home that is in a lot of trouble. The Kakapo is a large green ightless parrot and was once found throughout New Zealand un l introduced mammals such as rats, cats, possums and stoats nearly drove them to ex nc on. The last remaining Kakapo survived in
parts of Southland such as in Fiordland and on Stewart Island. Many of the remaining Kakapo are now on o shore predator free islands in Southland and during the breeding season some chicks are raised in cap vity in Invercargill. There are currently only around 150 Kakapo le in the world today. In Term 4 the Year 8 students held their market day and raised funds which went straight to helping the Kakapo Recovery Programme as they prepare for the next breeding season. A Department of Conserva on ranger who works in the Kakapo Recovery team came to speak to the students at assembly.
