OTAGO UNIVERSITY SHEILAH WINN SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL
On 28 March 2018, a deligh ul cast gave a
ne performance in this compe on. Carl Rodmell, Tane Froude, Caleb McKenzie and Kaea Edwin from Southland Boys’ teamed up with Joey Sheppard and Serena Lam from Southland Girls’ to perform the casket scene from The Merchant of Venice. Well done to these young Thespians.
SOUTHLAND SECONDARY SCHOOL DEBATING CHAMPIONSHIPS
These Championships were held at Southland Girls’ High School, from 17 to 19 August 2018.
They started on Friday
a er school with the junior compe on, to determine the winners to go forward to compete again on Sunday. Southland Boys’ High School had two teams entered in the Junior Sec on. They were:
Year 10:
Sam White, Joel Morgan, Dylan Lee
Year9:
Daniel Ti er, Noah Stra ord, Sebas an Carston
Our Year 10 group went forward to compete on Sunday a ernoon. They won two of their debates and came third overall in the Year 10 Sec on.
Our senior team consisted of: Isaac Myron, Kapila Tohiariki and Will Scully. They won two of their three debates and Will Scully was awarded the Best Speaker of the Senior Sec on.
The three teams were well- rehearsed and professional in their appearance, behaviour and speaking skills. They faced s compe on from the opposing teams, but remained composed at all mes. This was the result of many hours of prac ce, not only in deba ng techniques, but in presenta on and improving vocal skills.
