SCHOOL HOLIDAY
JUNIOR COOKING PROGRAMME
During the Term 2 holidays, catering teacher Sco Buchanan
and our senior culinary team held a junior cooking programme for
school students between the ages of 8-13 years. The programme was over
three days and each day there were approximately 25 budding young chefs taking part.
They prepared and cooked two savoury items and one treat item each day. Some of their menus included; Chicken S r Fry, Mini Quiches, Macaroni Cheese, Caramel Popcorn, Fruit Kebabs, Spaghe Bolognaise and much more. They also learned essen al kitchen skills and work habits such as cleaning and dying as they work, food hygiene, how to read recipes and measure correctly. If they had not eaten their food before the end of the day, they took it home for their parents to sample.
This is the rst me Southland Boys’ High School has held a Junior Cooking Programme during the school holidays and the feedback from the children and parents was very posi ve. All pro ts raised from the cooking school went towards suppor ng the boys in our SBHS Culinary Team who competed at the Na onal Hospitality Championships in Auckland on 11 August 2018.
Digital Technologies
The curriculum of 2018 has reached
a major milestone set as a target ve
years ago. Digital Technologies now has Databases, Web Design, Computer Science and Programming right through to the Year 13 level.
The Year 13 Computer Science class inves gated advanced algorithms, so ware engineering and ventured into the area of ar cial intelligence. Students researched factors contribu ng to making ar cial
intelligence for chat bots. The research discovered the increasing integra on of A.I. into the world around us and how A.I. chat bots can be used to support those with demen a. Students ran the famous Turing Test which was the major focus of the 2014 lm Ex Machina.
This test requires someone to act as a tester to interact with both the A.I. and
a human through a typed conversa on. The tester doesn’t know which of the two usernames sending replies is the A.I. and if the tester can’t tell which username belongs to the A.I. a er the conversa on then A.I. passes the Turing Test. Currently no A.I. to date has passed the Turin Test
but this was a good learning experience as to the reasons why and the challenges involved.
Programming has con nued to grow to
new heights with the text-based JavaScript language being used to create games in Years 11 to 13. This was a rst for both Year 11 and 13 and now increasing numbers of students are leaving to study ICT, So ware Engineering and Computer Science.
The student work of all year levels in this subject is being exhibited for the world to see as a re ec on of their e orts and understanding on the subject website h p://digitech.sbhs.school.nz/
