OLD BOYS
SBHS OLD BOYS’ ASSOCIATION REPORT 2018
It is pleasing to report on another year
of progress for the Old Boys’ Associa on. At this year’s AGM, we welcomed John Low, Neill Blackmore, and Karl Lamb to join the exis ng commi ee of Jim Watson (President), Brendan Copeland (Secretary), Rowly Currie, Trevor Oliver, Reece
Oliver, Wayne Hulls, Russell Read, Bevan McNaughton, Alex Glennie, Peter Redpath, Roger Wilson, and Ken Bowie. Craig Smith was re-appointed as our Auditor.
Our rst “catch-up” of the year was held
in April, in Invercargill’s Coldstream Club. Our guest speaker was Old Boy Jim Boult, currently Mayor of Queenstown/Lakes District Council. Jim has been involved in many companies and organisa ons at CEO and/or Directorship level, as well as having had success in the motor-sports arena in his spare me. Along with some interes ng and surprising comparisons of Queenstown then and now, Jim provided an entertaining overview of his career. A very convivial evening ensued, with many new faces a ending, and re-acquain ng with old schoolmates.
At our second “catch-up” in September,
our guest speaker was David Grant, whose father, Don Grant, was Rector from 1951 un l his sudden death in 1963, when
David was only 16. David’s background as
a teacher, author and historian, produced
a thoroughly interes ng story about his father, at mes both frank and emo onal, as well as humorous. I’m sure we all felt that we had a be er understanding of the man we knew as a rather serious, yet respected, Rector. His nickname “Joe Grimm” actually originated during his WW2 army years, where he rose through the ranks to become a Lieutenant Colonel, and by the end of the war commanded the 23rd Ba alion. He was held in high regard by those who fought alongside him, and/or served under his command. Thank you, David, for this very personal account.
Our regular “catch-ups” (6 to date) never fail to amaze us with the diversity and experiences of our fellow Old Boys.
Our Old Boys’ database con nues to grow, thanks mainly to the e orts of
Commi ee member, Wayne Hulls. We are very interested to hear from anyone who can advise us of more Old Boys’ names and informa on for our records, as well as someone who can help us with entering these details to the database.
Our Museum Commi ee s ll meets regularly, and again assisted with the Year 7 students’ rst visit to the School Museum in February, as well as having a presence there at the annual Open Day. The ongoing contribu on of Archivist Lynley Dear must again be acknowledged with thanks.
Last year the Old Boys’ Commi ee resolved to con nue the annual prac ce, over many years, of gran ng a Scholarship to both the Dux and Proxime Accessit. The amounts granted were increased to $1500 and, $1000 respec vely, along with the congratula ons of all Old Boys, in recogni on of academic excellence.
As this is being wri en, we are in touch with some Christchurch Old Boys, and plan to revive regular ac vi es there following the disrup on caused by the devasta ng earthquakes of 2011.
