Derek Keane
I le Southland Boys’ High School in 1951, then gained my degree in Arts from Otago University. During this me, I spent my holidays as a reporter for
the Otago Daily Times. I then moved to Auckland as Sales Manager of John Court department store, before crossing the Tasman to se le in Sydney. Here I worked for a couple of bou que adver sing agencies, before joining Hansen Rubensohn McCann Erickson for ten years, spending me in New York at the headquarters of Interpublic, which was the number one adver sing agency in size interna onally. I then started my own Sydney agency, Derek Keane & Company, with long term clients such as Holden, Isuzu, Breville, Australand (previously Hooker Homes and Home Units) etc.
My wife, Julie, and I have owned investment/holiday proper es in Queenstown, New Zealand and Denarau, Fiji, as well as proper es in the inner east of Sydney. We no longer own our overseas proper es, but gain an excellent re rement income from our Sydney proper es. I have three grown children, Jason, a solicitor and lecturer at the College of Law, Nicole, a commercial interior designer and Philippa, a gold and silversmith. I also have ve grandchildren aged ten and younger.
ABOVE: Derek Keane (centre), with two fellow SBHS friends, John Heenan and Peter Boyd. The year they le school, they decided to walk to Milford Sound, only
to be hit with extreme weather. Rather than walk over the mountain, they decided to crawl through the uncompleted Homer Tunnel. They emerged on the other side to nd an Otago Daily Times photographer, extremely surprised to see them. The centre of the tunnel was so ght, it was impossible to turn back, even if they had wanted to.
RIGHT: This photo was taken on Derek’s recent visit to Southland Boys’ High School, with the Deschler cup, that he was awarded in sixth form (Year 12).
I am a very proud ‘old boy’ of Southland Boys’ High School, and remember my teachers, and days there, with extreme fondness and gra tude, always calling by when I am in Invercargill visi ng family. At SBHS I gained an excellent educa on and love of sports, giving me the founda on for what has been a wonderful, rewarding and successful life.’
