· Forced to follow on, Southland again lost MacGregor in the opening over and four further wickets before the total of 30, but then Polson (28) and Adams (33) recovered the position somewhat with some good forceful batting. With Chalmers contributing 11, Southland managed to total 106, still 26 runs being required to reach St. Andrew's rst-innings total, and so defeat was incurred by an innings and 26 runs.

The outstanding di erence in the two teams was the elding-St. Andrews elded brilliantly both in the air and on the ground, while Southland elded poorly in both departments, dropping at least 10 catches and letting through well over 50 runs through mis elds.

Played at Dunedin under ideal conditions, this proved to be the most exciting of the three inter-schools, the result being in doubt until the nal ball. King's won the toss and elected to bat, but were soon in trouble with Watson taking a wicket in his opening over. However, poor elding by Souhland enabled King's to reach 215, with Lees (79) and Joohnston (35) being the principal scorers. Shirley (four for 63) bowled well for South land and was supported by accurate fast bowling from Watson, Whyte and Pascoe who each took two wickets.

Played at lnvercargill under ideal conditio!ls. Watson won the toss for Southland and decided to bat on a wicket damp from overnight rain. The Southland bats men were caught on a drying wicket which quickly cut up and allowed the rather inaccurate Otago pace attack to dictate terms to batsmen who were reluctant to show any aggression a all. Only in Adams (39) and Watson (16 not out) was there any evidence of at tempted aggression, and McLaughlan (12) was the only top-order batsman who looked capable of keeping out the pace attack. Of the Otago bowlers Pitches (the cap tain). who captured four for 21, was the only one who used the conditions well and his swing bowling had all batsmen in trouble.
Forced to follow on, Southland started more con vincingly with Morgan (15) and Polson (10) laying the foundations for a good total. However, with the exception of Adam (28) and M. Galbraith (25), who both batted con dently, the Southland team failed to capitalise on the good start and were soon seven for 90, still 86 runs behind King's total. But the tailenders were equal to the task and when stumps were drawn Southland were nine for 120, having avoided the innings defeat.
Facing a total of 109, Otago began very aggressively with Blair (30) and Lindsay (64) knockinq up 67 for the rst wicket. But apart from Haley (23) and these two. the Otago batsmen had di culty in scoring at an even rate, so the declaration was made at eight for 158. It was mainly due to tight pace bowling by Watson
In King's rst innings Southland had the misfortune to lose G. (Peanuts) Adams, who was injured while trying to take a catch, but the opposition sportingly allowed our twelfth man, L. Galbraith, to bat instead.
(three for 40) and Pascoe (three for 33) that the lead was restricted to 49.

In Southland's second innings a more purposeful attitude was evident with McLaughlan (26) showing a ne array of attacking shots, and Morgan (nine in 80 minutes) adding 35 for the rst wicket. Polson (59) and Shirley (31) continued aggressively to enable South land to total a respectable 161 all out.•

With only an hour left of play and little hope of a result, Otago managed to reach 42 for one before the close of play, Blair being 29 not out.
