                            , PUBLISHER'S PREFACE
This second volume of the Collected Works
of Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak brings to-
gether his chief investigations in Oriental Scholar-
                       ship. Lok. Tilak is well·knownas a gr:eatfreedom-
                       nghter, statesman and nation-builder. Political
struggle prevented him for a long time from giving
his best to Oriental studies but the then Govern-
ment helped them by forcibly retiring him to the
prison cell. The Orion is an essay on the antiquity
of the Vedas, and the Arctic Home In The Vedas
sets forth, with respect for strict methods of his-
torical investigation, the conclusion that the neigh-
bourhood of the North Pole was the original home
of the Aryans. A MissiDt Verse ill dle SaDkhya
Klriluas shows Tila'k•s acute power of deduction
:in constructing the missing KArikl from the con-
                       tents of the commentary.
