     Dear Parents,
Welcome to this edition of Blossoms. It is amazing to think that this is already the third edition since we returned from the vaca-
tion. Where does the time go?

This week has been a busy one with students getting ready for Sports Day on Saturday. This event will be held at the Regent
Secondary School. Please arrive from 7.30 with your children so we can start promptly at 8.00.

It has come to my attention that some children may be feeling anxious about the Check Point assessments we use at Abuja
Prep. Some anxiety is quite natural but it is important that we ensure our children do not become overly stressed. The Check
Point assessments are an indicator of how we are doing as a school and they give us some good information in relation to our
teaching and learning. They can also help us to uncover areas that children may need some additional support as well as areas
they are doing really well in. We need to encourage our children without overstating the significance of the assessments. We
need to think of them as a tool for development.

Despite this, if you feel your child may be suffering from stress please talk to the class teacher. With young children often find-
ing it difficult to verbalize their feelings, it can be hard to know when to step in and help, but here are a list of potential stress
indicators to look out for in your child:

     • Extreme emotional reactions to small stimuli – If your child makes a small mistake in their homework and their reaction to
this is disproportionate, they may be under stress.

     • A desire to not go to school – If your child is adamant that they ‘don’t want to go into school’ around the time of assess-
ments , stress could be the cause.

     • Stress manifesting as physical problems -Stomach aches, headaches or other physical complaints could be caused by
         stress.

     • Low self-esteem – If you hear your child referring to themselves as ‘stupid’ or telling themselves that they are ‘bad’ at cer
tain things, this could be stress talking.
