tiful works of art. What is however, not well known to ◊ Below: Government buildings in Mbombela
the public in general is that the building construction ◊ Below Centre: Paper mill in the Lowveld
was a major exercise since owing to policy the vari-
ous parts were all contracted to separate contractors
of which most were small entities. On top of designing
some complex dome structures, the civil engineering
team had a major task to coordinate all the different
contractors. Some of them did not even have the luxury
to hire modern shuttering systems but had to rely on
bits and pieces to construct the form work for beams
and columns. This did not deter the team from deliver-
ing a complex at norms and standards conforming to
specifications but it took time, patience and effort.

16. Sugar and pulp and paper mills in the
Lowveld portion of the province are huge industries that
rely heavily on water resources. The raw material for
the pulp mills come from some of the biggest manmade
forests in the world and the sugar cane fields stretches
over many square kilometres of farmland. All of these
are obviously serviced by the road networks and heavy
traffic management is just one more task that civils
have to cater for.
