1961-1963 Humble Beginnings to a New Career
From humble beginnings to a budding career in Real Estate. I was on the way; it was not long before I was able to assert my position with the company I was working for. The first to go was rent collecting, I promptly told the property manager what he could do with that position. Management offered me a position as sales manager for Alldis & Cox, a new acquisition that the company had made in Bondi Junction. They employed a new property manager who I connected with, a nice fellow in his early sixties with a background in news agency ownership. I continued my real estate residential sales, specialising in home unit development.
On the home front our lives were divided between work and family, namely Reneeā€™s parents. Renee was working as commercial graphic artist, creative work that she not only loved but was good at. We were no longer poor without a penny to our name, we lived comfortably, had friends and occasional holidays. One such holiday was driving from Sydney up to North Queensland with Steve Kellner, my friend from my school days. It was a drive and camping holiday; we drove as far as Hervey Bay before a cyclone sent us scurrying back to the Gold Coast for refuge. We nearly came unstuck trying to cross the Collide River which was flooding. I entered the river with Renee in the front passenger seat and Steve and 3 other guys sitting on the bonnet and roof to keep the car on the road. We placed a cover over the radiator and other engine parts and proceeded to enter the river. It was frightening, however we made it to the other side, and we were the last car to do so. Renee was suffering recurring sickness bouts which we discovered on arrival back in Sydney was due to pregnancy. At no time did we discuss children or planned for such, typical of the times that we lived in, it just happened. Here we were about to become parents.
