3. Teaching Vocabulary
Experienced teachers of English as a second
language know very well how important vocabulary is.
They know students must learn thousands that
speakers and writers of English use. Fortunately, the
need for vocabulary is one point on which teachers and
students agree (Allen, 1983).
a. Vocabulary lesson for the First Stage
In this case we have noted the following points:
1. When we think about language learning in
the classroom, it is useful to think also of
ways in which people learn, vocabulary
outside of school.
2. Vocabulary is best learned when someone
feels that a certain word is needed.
3. Vocabulary for the first stage of ESL usually
names certain things and persons in the
classroom.
4. Although such vocabulary is essential,
foreign words for family things may not seem
really necessary to students, especially when
English is not used outside their ESL class,
because the words they already know their
