Anekachat Bhujong (Variety of Serpents)
The name of this barge is represented in its prow that is intricately carved
and gilded in a delicate pattern of small serpents. The Sanskrit word ‘bhujong’
is often used as a synonym for naga. Nagas are serpent deities that represent
power, wisdom, and fertility.
The Anekachat Bhujong Royal Barge was built in the reign of His Majesty King
Chulalongkorn. Its hull is painted pink outside and red inside. In the middle of
the barge is a canopy. Traditionally, Anekachat Bhujong would function as a place
for the King to put on his crown, hat and other ornaments before the procession
starts and to take them off after the procession reaches the destination.
The length of the barge is 45.67 metres and the width at the beam is 2.91 metres.
The depth of the hull is 91 centimetres and the draught is 46 centimetres. Its
displacement is 7.7 tons. It is manned by two officers fore and aft, two steersmen,
61 oarsmen, one standard bearer, one signalman, seven bearers of royal chatra
(white umbrella) and one chanter.
