Suea Thayan Chon (Tiger Leaping the Waves) and
Suea Khamron Sindhu (Tiger Roaring over Waters)
These are the two leading barges in the royal barge procession.
The design evolved from ancient war boats. Each one is painted with
a polychrome stylised tiger with a cannon mounted on the prow.
The inside of the hull is painted red. They function as protector of
the procession with the guard commanders aboard them. The date of
their original construction is unknown. It is recorded that both were
restored in 1991.
The length of Suea Thayan Chon is 22.20 metres with a width of
1.75 metres at the beam and depth at the hull of 70 centimetres.
The length of Suea Khamron Sindhu is 22.23 metres with a width
of 1.75 metres and depth at the hull of 70 centimetres. Each barge
is manned by one officer, two steersmen, 26 oarsmen and one
signalman.
