Foreword
The Coronation of His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua in 2019 was
an auspicious and special moment in Thai history. The event encompassed several ceremonies that carried
different purposes and symbolic meanings. The raison d’être behind these ceremonial procedures is influenced
by Hindu beliefs intertwined with Buddhist teachings.
The artistic and historical value of the Coronation which epitomises Thailand’s centuries-old history
and tradition has inspired the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand to compile information
and pictures of the ceremonies in two compact volumes.
The first one is entitled “The Coronation of King Rama X His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn
Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua.” Its content covers the sacred ceremonies held in April and May 2019 such as the Royal Purification
and Anointment Ceremonies, the Royal Procession on Land and the Royal Audience granted to members of
the Diplomatic Corps, Consular Corps and International Organisations. The second book, now in your hands, is
“The Coronation of King Rama X : The Royal Barge Procession” which focuses on the Royal Barge Procession
held on 12 December 2019, the magnificent finale of the Coronation that amazed and captured the attention
of the world. This book explains the history of the royal barges and their formation in a royal procession that has
existed for centuries. It also includes a collection of memorable pictures of this rare event.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs would like to thank the Fine Arts Department, the Royal Thai Navy,
the Department of Local Administration and the Government Housing Bank for contributing invaluable information,
illustrations and pictures contained in this book. It is hoped that readers will be able to imagine the mesmerising
sight and sound that took place on 12 December 2019 and appreciate this cultural legacy and heritage as Thailand’s
contribution to enriching the world.
