“WATER PLAYS A ROLE IN MUCH OF MY ART,” SAYS ARTIST JEROEN DEEN, STANDING IN FRONT OF SOME OF HIS FASCI- NATING WORKS, WHICH, DUE TO THE UNUSUAL USE OF CO- LOUR, HAVE A SOMEWHAT ALIENATING QUALITY. “MY FATHER SAILED ABOARD AN INLAND TANKER OF NEDLLOYD AND I WOULD SOMETIMES TAG ALONG. Deen’s artistic pursuits started at a relatively late age. “I was already
28 when I enrolled in art academy. After four years, I graduated as an applied artist. At the academy, I learned to see and to tell stories. The image I produce is the story that I want to communicate to the world.
I enjoy showing people things. Like everyday places where nothing seems to happen, for example. My works are all about the moment, the fleeting, the incidence of light at that exact time. You could
more or less consider my works drawn snapshots. This gives them a photographic quality, both in terms of subject matter and contrast. However, I do not copy photos, as some people may think. My biggest
