grievance is when someone asks me which photoshop filter I have used. I really do everything from scratch. It’s hand-made digital. Each work is truly unique.”
TASTE THE ATMOSPHERE
Deen works from his studio in the historic centre of IJlst, one of the famous eleven cities in the Dutch province of Friesland. “I always
visit the location I aim to depict first, take pictures and taste the atmosphere. Sometimes people will send me a photograph and ask me to use that to create a work of art. I can’t work that way.” As a modern artist, he paints on the computer, using a digital drawing
pen and tablet (Wacom) as his tools. In this way, he creates his works of art from scratch, layer by layer and by hand. “Nothing brings me greater joy than matching a limited number of colours for maximum effect.” Deen refers to his technique as a digital variety of screen printing. “But without the mess that traditional screen printing always entails. The possibilities afforded by working digitally make the screen superfluous.”
