In just one minute in 2014, the Internet records 204 million emails, 3.3 million Facebook posts, 4 million google
searches, and a whopping 50 billion WhatsApp messages. Other social media are simultaneously active, with 120
hours youtube video upload, 342 thousand tweets and 1.4 million minutes voice calls in skype, not to mention other
Internet activities like blog posts and photo upload in the same single minute.
The benefits of social media can be classified into three categories (Lange et al., 2008):
• Community - The social media let people interact with each other in form of affinity networks, friendship groups,
etc. Sharing of ideas and information is made easy with various kinds of online communities.
• Collaboration - The connection of people allows pooling expertise and experience for collaboration of work. It
could be as simple as information search for a commodity, or more complicated work such as encyclopedia in wiki
format.
• Contribution - The social media enables people’s contribution of ideas and work. The development of open source
software, for example, is a result of people’s contribution online.
The dynamics of social media provide space and opportunity for creation and development in an instantaneous and
engaging way. The mind-boggling data in the infographic indicate not only the popularity of individual sites or
platforms, but also the stunning growth of social media.
