The TCP/IP Model – Layer 3

      • The device at Layer 3 that we’ll study is the router. A router operates at Layer 3, runs many
different protocols, and uses IP Addresses. Routers keep track of many different IP
networks and allow them to communicate with each other.

      • The router also keeps track of the best path to reach another network. For example, if you
are located in the USA and you are connected to a web server in Switzerland, there are
many different paths in between those two locations. So which is the best path to use?
This is another major function that routers perform.
