5 4 JAGGEDEDGE
He had passed her apartment and looked for a parking space. Sitting in the car, he realized that he had no idea what to say or do. He got out knowing if he continued to sit he would lose his nerve and keep driving. He wanted to hold her, still feeling her touch. So he walked to her door and knocked.
“Oh hell. Suppose she is not home or she doesn’t hear me. She’s mute not deaf, dummy,” he thought to himself.
Arnetta opened the door slowly confronted by a man with high collars and a hat. She started to close the door and caught his eyes. Breath sticking in her throat, she swung the door open and jumped into his arms smiling and crying. His soul left fear and anxiety in her caress like a bird in flight.
God, you feel great,” he said, walking into the house not caring if she could not respond.
It felt good to say it. It didn’t matter to either of them sealed in embrace. Tears of joy crept slowly from Tom’s eyes as all of hers welcomed him. Both stood as one interrupted only by their irregular breathing.
“I missed you,” he said, as he looked into her eyes from the melting embrace.
“Me too,” Arnetta motioned with her head in a half smile renewing the embrace.
“I must leave on business in a few days and be gone for a little while.”
“How long?” she wrote, then scribbled through it. “It doesn’t matter. Just make sure you come back to me,” she wrote.
They both sat holding hands.
Tom gently held her chin up looking into her eyes reminding him of what a sensuous woman she was. “I won’t tell you not to worry,” he said, “because I know better. But when I return we can reclaim the life that has escaped us both.”
Her tears continued to fall, as she dared to hope for the im- possible.
Tom wiped her eyes and said calmly. “Let’s use this time to be who we want to be, feeling what we want to feel before we even
