“Relax fellas,” soothed Tom.” I promise it will be okay, and it’s not what you think.”
“What do we think?” Paul queried.
“That this is about you instead of the job. And that is wrong. You are my friends. Trust me. Follow me,” he said leading the men into the briefing room.
Each man filed in and took a seat. Tom stood up front near a diagram.
“I know that you all have that burning question on your mind so let me get started. This is a diagram of a project that will con- trol operations in 50 states from one central location. All files will be encrypted so there are no security breaches. Only one copy of everything will exist and it will all be on dvd’s. I have most of the files from the branches with only a few more out- standing. So we will work on the part of the project concerning the main office first. On this chart, I have outlined the procedure and methods for the entire operation. Our primary job is to write the code that will allow the information to be removed from each of the branch’s computers as it is transferred to the host. This is strictly a no trust situation.”
“Sounds like you want each branch to have no accountabil- ity or control of what goes into the host,” said Paul.
“Bingo,” said Tom. “It is a method of ensuring that the host is the only record keeper. The second part is to set up a system within the same system whereby the controller for each branch has the power to shut down his own system definitively by re- mote, in case of emergency.”
“Do you mean . . .”
Tom interrupted Paul.
“Yes. I mean that the manager of each arm will have the
power to shut down his individual operation, if it is compromised cutting off leads to the host.”
“Which, as we all know, means tampering with the telephone lines,” said Paul.
