better, I will be in the soup with you all the way. So if it turns into a shit sandwich, we’ll all have to take a bite.”
The group started to walk and talk.
“Okay, Tom, let’s have it,” said one of the men. Give us the bottom line.”
“Until this project is completed, you will all have to stay in my care.”
“Just exactly what does that mean?” Paul questioned. “Wherever you go, someone else will be with you.” “Why?” Paul prodded.
“This is a very hush, hush operation with very tight security.
I wanted you guys to know the score going in. Now you have a double-edged sword to swing. If you want out, you’re out. No problems, no hassle. Nothing. You will be left just exactly as I found you only not hungry. The project starts tomorrow, and if you want out, just break off before we get back to the restaurant parking lot.”
Tom walked ahead of the crowd as they neared the car.
“We’ve been talking, Paul muttered,” and decided that if you’re in, we’re in. But I’m curious about one thing. Why did you pick us? You know plenty of programmers and we aren’t the best there is.”
“Yeah. But there are no better hackers anywhere, and that programmer/hacker combination is what this project will need.” Group members slowly looked at each other with a little con-
cern and said in unison, Let’s do it!”
Once everyone was in the car, and Tom took them to a de-
partment store. Each man received a small envelope and a few hours to shop. When they regrouped, Tom drove to the cabin hideout.
When we get to the cabin, I’ll give you the plan,” he said.
The remainder of the trip continued in silence. All of the passengers exited the car without a word and went into the cabin followed by another car pulling up after the last occupant closed the door.
