 2030-JONE
You’re going to be late for school. Let me know if I can drop you when I change clothes.”
Jennifer walked past her stepdaughter and went upstairs to change.
“Jen, where did you learn those moves?” Sienna asked.
“Remember those bowling practices three times a week? Actually, they were Hapkido lessons with your father’s best friend.”
“You mean Visara?”
“I knew the day would come when we would need to gel and talk about girl things like black belts and stuff.”
Both smiled at each other and went to their respective bed- rooms. Jennifer finished changing and went downstairs to wait for a sign from Sienna. Finally, she thought about her bag went back to pick it up and considered staying at home for a second. As she went back to the door, Sienna was behind her.
“Jen, I’m leaving my car, will you drop me at school and sign my report card?”
“No problem.”
Both sat mute as Jennifer drove toward the school.
Thanks, Jen.”
Jennifer removed an angel pin from her lapel as Sienna got
out of the car.
“I want you to have this,” because I’d like to start a tradition.
And since I have no daughter, I would like for you to have my angel.”
Sienna was silent as she looked at the pin.
“I would be honored,”
Jennifer placed it on Sienna’s collar and smiled. Quickly,
Sienna put out her hand, and the two shook hands in respect. “Thanks, Jen.”
Jennifer was so overwhelmed that she was speechless. She got back into her car and watched the teenager walk away, feel- ing a thin line of affection between them. Once Sienna was out of sight, Jennifer headed to work.
