Jennifer parked her car and started walking toward the build- ing lost in thoughts of how the day had gone. She wanted to cry. She was pleased with herself but thankful for the extra makeup helping to hide the painful bruise. Jennifer’s blessings consisted of a loving husband, two darling sons, and a daughter who that was finally coming of age. She smiled then grimaced in pain.
“Hi, Jen. There is absolutely no way you could guess what happened to us today,” said Tamara, her junior partner. “A cli- ent came in and said he has a constitutional law problem. When I told him that we don’t usually take those types of cases, he started pulling out a retainer before I could finish. He reached in his bag and produced $750,000 and asked me if it would be enough for a retainer. My shock wouldn’t let me answer. I just pulled out an agreement before I snapped out of it.”
“I don’t believe it!” After the kind of day I’ve had, I don’t know if I can handle any more good news. I knew this day was going to be something special, but a $750,000 retainer may be more than I can handle. Oh God! This is scary. Did you examine the check?”
“Actually, he paid in cash.”
“Before I go completely crazy, did you put it in the account?” “Yes, dear.”
“I guess we need to declare a holiday with pay or some-
thing.”
“Well, we still have . . .”
“I know. I know. Essential things can be done, but some of
us need relief. Half of us need to be off with pay today and the other half tomorrow. This is too much. I am going into my office and sit down. This is turning out to be a dream come true. Please have the client’s file brought to me before everyone gets away. I’ll peruse it myself. Who is this high roller anyway?”
“Some guy named Corin. Sexy name, huh!
“I think I had better make sure this is all on the level. This much cash scares the dickens out of me, even with a contract?”
“Hey, what happened to your face?”
