In conjunction with the McGill University Chair in Canadian – Scottish Studies, the Black Watch Museum & Archives benefits from the student internship program which sees a student in history work for the arches over the summer. For the second year, we welcomed Gracie Forgie. Here are her thoughts:
Over the past three years I have been working towards earning a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in History and double minors in Canadian Studies and Political Science. I am incredibly excited to be entering my fourth and final year at McGill University this fall.
It has been a pleasure interning with the Black Watch Museum & Archives. Their involvement in many historic wars, as well as peacekeeping (and peacemaking) operations around the world, has led to the organization amassing one of the best regimental archives in Canada. For a young history major with a great passion for Canadian history, it has been a joy to learn how to properly handle and index old and fragile materials from the archive which have helped to inform my understanding of the Black Watch, and Canada’s history more broadly. These skills have made me a better researcher and therefore a better student of history. I am looking forward to bringing what I have learned into my last year of studies at McGill and into my future endeavours at the post-graduate level.
Throughout my time working with the archives I was constantly stunned by how much the organization had been able to preserve over the years. The many letters, newspaper clippings, equipment orders, training documents, and various other materials that I worked with, dating as far back as the late 19th century and continuing until the late 20th, all offered rich insight into the impressive history of the Black Watch. I learned a lot about tactics and operations, but I was most struck by the people I read about. I noticed that in all the correspondence and photographs I studied there existed a common theme of pride and comradery amongst the many members, past and present, of the Black Watch. I feel very fortunate to have been provided an opportunity to learn more about this impressive organization. I have definitely gained a great appreciation for the people of the Black Watch and what they continue to do for Canada.
