Lost legacy
A drone view captures what remains of Brazil’s National
Museum in Rio de Janeiro on Sept. 3, the day after a
devastating fire tore through the building. The fire’s origin
is still being investigated, but many in Brazil see its true
cause as neglect of a 200-year-old institution that lacked
even a sprinkler system. Although officials have promised
to reconstruct the building, most of its 20 million artifacts
and artworks are lost forever. One scientist, frustrated
by futile efforts to safeguard the collection, declared the
blaze “a tragedy foretold.”
