Former U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords,
a Democrat, was meeting with constituents in
front of aTucson,Ariz., grocery store in 2011
when a gunman opened fire. She was gravely
wounded; six others were killed.The next year,
20 children and six adults were murdered in
the Sandy Hook school shooting.That incident
prompted Giffords, now 48, and her husband
Mark Kelly, a 54-year-old Navy veteran and for-
mer NASA astronaut, to seek solutions to gun
violence.They founded an organization called
Giffords and now work with politicians in both
parties to advocate for stricter gun laws, includ-
ing background checks, across the country.
‘I’m a gun owner,
I’m a supporter
of the Second
Amendment.
But we must do
better than this,’
says Kelly. ‘We’re
like no other
country in the
world on this.’
