Simple Past Tense (Subject + past simple)

It is used to express:

(1) an action that began and ended at a particular time in the past

(2) an action that occurred over a period of time but was completed in the past

(3) an activity that took place regularly in the past

Example:

Malin kundang was a healthy, diligent, and skill fu

Past Continuous (Subject + to be (past) + present participle)

It is used to express:

(1) interrupted actions

(2) a continuous state or repeated action in the part

(3) events planned in the past

Example:

Malin kundang was sailing as usual

Past Perfect Tense (Subject + had + past participle)

It is used to express:

(1) a past action that occurred before another past action

(2) an action that was expected to occur in the past

Example:

Malin kundang’s father had passed away when he was baby.
