The burning tree has obvious biblical references stemming from my interest in a conflation of religious and wilderness
imagery. In many paintings, as in this, it comes to represent transformation.
This picture then begins to speak of the transformations that come over time both in an emotional sense and in the physical world. It contains images of Jane Franklins birthplace in England, the imagined ice fields and , as many of the paintings in the late series of Jane, the image of the empty bed features strongly.
