Description
Often nicknamed by fly tyers as yarn dubbed as the "floating
yarn”.
Since its invention poly yarn has been used in many industries
from carpets to seatbelts. However for fly tyers its unique abilities
make this a stunning fly tying material.
With a specific gravity/density of 0.91 g/cm³ poly yarn is lighter
than water and so floats making it ideal for dry flies particularly
where it is used for parachute posts and as dubbing. When used
on a dry fly it absorbs floatant and keeps your fly floating. Many
companies claim to use poly yarn however fly tyers can easily
Red Sage test if it is genuine poly yarn, simply cut a 1” 25mm strip, scrunch
it in your fingers and drop it into a glass of water. If it is genuine
poly yarn it will dip below the surface then return to the surface
film. It is this lighter than water feature that makes it an ideal dry
fly material.
