Leaving Talgarth, you follow the road beside the
River Wye which opens into the Golden Valley beyond
Hay. Travelling from Talgarth you can see the Black
Mountains to your right, as you pass through villages
of Three Cocks and Glasbury. If you detour over the
river, the road leads to the villages of Llyswen and
Clyro.
Hay-on-Wye
Hay-on-Wye is built around the restored 12th Century
Castle - now a centre for arts, literature and learning.
Richard Booth put Hay on the map in the 1960s by
declaring it a separate country with himself as King and
made it the Town of Books. Today it is most famous for
being home to Hay Festival of Literature which attracts
some extremely famous people to the little town every May.
Talgarth
Talgarth is built around the working water mill with onsite
café and bakery. Some beautiful walks start here including
to the Pwll yr Wrach nature reserve (muddy after rain).
Talgarth is the only town in the Brecon Beacons with a
gliding club, you may spy the graceful, silent gliders
playing on the thermals over the Black Mountains.
