Construction
It's not unusual to assume that construction is all about getting your hands dirty, but you might be surprised about what the industry can offer.
Did you know?
• CITB estimate that more than 9,100 extra construction jobs in Wales are set to be created in the next few years
• In addition, 22% of the current workforce are over 50, and 15% are in their 60s
- this retirement skills gap means there is a huge opportunity for young people to fill!
• In addition to the traditional trades, job roles in the industry can range from:
• Engineering
• Project management
• Quantity surveying & architecture
• Urban design
• Green Buildings and environmental assessment
• Many careers offer excellent progression prospects e.g. a trades person could work their way up to becoming a site manager earning £60,000+
• Not all professional roles require a degree, with many offering apprenticeships as a route into the industry
Construction as an industry keeps on growing and there are many elements to consider such as • Housing
• Infrastructure
• Commercial
• Industrial
What does the future actually look like? Put simply, exciting.
Housing
Green home conversion (retrofit) is a process where existing houses are converted towards better energy efficiency and sustainability. The Welsh Government is investing heavily into this retrofit process so exciting career pathways are becoming available that will not only guarantee secure long term employment, but will also play a huge part in helping the environment. Infrastructure
South West Wales have created a Regional Economic Delivery Plan, many infrastructure projects are highlighted within this plan which the construction sector will be heavily involved in, from new energy sources, transport, environmental improvement schemes right through to redevelopment of towns, cities and harborside locations
Commercial and Industrial
Many business hubs are being set up across the region, but to get them started they need to be built. Designing, managing and working on these large scale projects will provide job security, good wages and great future career prospects.
