for their contribution on BBC South East News at such short notice. Peter Lambourne’s interview with Ian Sanders of Cold War Conversations award-winning podcast was aired recently. He shared his experiences of Operation Dominic in great detail.
This edition of Campaign includes perspectives of not just our nuclear test veterans but that of the widow of Jim Perriman, Josie, and of Elin
Doyle, daughter of Mike Doyle, who some of you may recall. We also read of Ken McGinley’s thoughts on the BNTVA and of the current political climate concerning Britain’s nuclear test veterans and recognition.
Michelle is busy collating oral histories as I write, where Britain's nuclear test veterans share the accounts of their participation at the nuclear tests, the impact on their lives and on their families. If you'd like to share your story, please contact us through the website, info@bntva.com or 0208 144 3080.
We have sent out 212 Nuclear Veterans’ Winter Warmers following the winter appeal. We had initially offered 100 gilets, but we heard from so many lovely nuclear test veterans with requests and offering information about service at the tests, that we succumbed and bought more to cater for the demand. We can see that some of you may have well known one another, and we will be in touch about linking you up, if that is what you would like.
We had multiple requests from crew members of the HMS Warrior, for instance!
We have now passed April, and we would like to thank those who have remembered and paid, but it is renewal time. If you haven’t already
paid, you can via the methods in the back page of the magazine. Thank you. We would also like to welcome our new members.
Finally, I have the pleasure of informing our members that the New Zealand Nuclear Test Veterans’ Association (NZNTVA) has made the following announcement, “We would like to announce that we have invited
Ceri McDade as our BNTVA representative onto the NZNTVA committee. It is time to unite and fight together for the rights of our veterans and families. Ceri has been a huge support to myself and a trusted friend.”
I will be working closely with Tere Tahi, Operation Grapple veteran,
Dr Al Rowland and Danu Sefton, daughter of Roy Sefton, who took the reins of the NZNTVA following the death of Roy early in 2021.
Danu and I have developed a mutual understanding over a long period of time for the wider and specific needs within the Commonwealth nuclear community, including a structured approach concerning the moral injury caused by participation at the atmospheric testing, its impact on veterans and their families and a focus on engaging with the New Zealand government concerning these issues.
