Early Days
The earliest records we have
show that in 1888 a Talywain Old
Boys team played a match
against local team Abersychan
Rangers, around this time there
was also an advert placed in the
Free Press stating that Talywain
were looking for fixtures with
good second class XV’s in the area.
It was also reported around then
in the Press that a Talywain team
played an away fixture against
Blaenavon but unfortunately
there is no record of that result,
later the same year we know the
Talywain team played Cwmynyscoy
Blue Stars & Blaenavon Forgeside
however again there is no record
of the results from those games.
We do know that the next side
Talywain played against that year
was Sebastopol Waterloo
Harlequins where Talywain won
by six tries to nil. Other fixtures
added after the advert in the
press were games against
Pontnewydd, Aberbeeg Six bells,
Abersychan Rangers and
Abertillery Harlequins.
The formation of Talywain
Rugby Football Club
In the year of 1898 a special
meeting took place in The White
Horse public house to explore
the possibility of combining
Talywain United, Abersychan
Black Watch and any other
interested parties to form a rugby
team to be known as Talywain
Rugby Football Club as it is
known today, later that same year
a second meeting was held and
as a result Talywain RFC was
formed with the plan to start
playing competitive games in the
season of 1898/99.
From that day forward everyone
involved in Talywain RFC believed
and were keen to impress on the
minds of youngsters in the area
that Talywain was a team of the
future.
One of Talywain’s greatest
achievements as a community
was to transform ‘Tom Pugh’s old
field’ into the recreation ground
which was opened on April 8th
1913, this then became known as
Talywain rugby clubs home
ground.
In 1973, Talywain moved to its
new and current pitch at Emlyn
Park, one of those in attendance
for the opening on that day was
Wales and British Lions legend
Gareth Edwards. It was only in
1983 that we built the current
clubhouse which stands on New
Road and welcomes you today...
