It can be difficult to look ahead and see what
future skills will be required for Health Care
when this sector requires so much attention
immediately for core skills gaps to be plugged.
However, there are elements of competency
that can accurately be predicted which will be
required.
Across all sectors, IT & Digital positions are
amongst the most advertised job roles and all
sectors are in need of digital skills. This is a
shortage now and could get worse as more
sectors digitalise more services.

Professionals
Managers Project Managers, senior leaders, are
all skills that employers in all sectors are
struggling to recruit. Such skills will be required
for H&SC to manage change processes and
system implementations, competition for the
best talent will be tough across the sectors.
Plans are also nearing completion of a biophilic
designed new hospital, which if the full scale of
the plan is realised will require some specialist
skills.
The future of healthcare will require strong
digital skills, critical thinking, big data and
analysis to ensure change processes and
strategy changes (Hywel Dda approach to
proactive care) can be achieved.
Digital covers other areas also, VR and
diagnostic systems, patient monitoring apps etc,
often digital and technology is not in the minds
of job seekers thinking of a career in Health &
Social Care, this will need to be addressed.
Many school leavers believe their future lies
within H&SC yet it is still hard to recruit, how
can this appetite be harnessed from school
leavers to employment?
Perception is key
The sector needs positive perception injecting
back into it.
Negative perceptions about:
• Strike action
• Covid
• Brexit
• Low Pay
Are all contributing to the recruitment problems
