Our staff

1800
Business started by Edmund and Hannah Ward who ran a fishmongers and game dealers in St Mary Street and High Street in Cardiff.
1870
The business was purchased from the Ward Family by Roger Ashton who had been an employer for a number of years.
1890
Roger Ashton and his wife Elizabeth moved into the newly opened Central Market - where we are today.
1898
The couple opened a second stall in the fish market at Hills Terrace. The market was evetually closed in 1920.
1920
The driving force behind the business was Elizabeth Ashton - whose initial is still used today - E. Ashton Fishmongers Ltd. The business was incorporated as a limited company with Elizabeth Ashton and her son Archibald as Directors. The company minute record book records that they both had salaries of £500 per year.
1935
Archibald’s son Douglas Ashton - a chartered accountant became involved in the business and it ran until 1973.
1973
The business was bought from Douglas Ashton by John Adams - a 4th generation fishmonger from nearby Penarth who had been a Seafish Industry board member and became a President of the National Federation of Fishmongers. Since 1973, John’s two sons, Nicholas and Jonathan have become Directors of the company.
Ashton’s is one of the oldest limited companies in Cardiff and has only changed hands twice in 200 years. Ashton’s has earned the reputation of being one of the UK’s leading fish retailing companies.
Boasting no less than three British Fish Craft Champions among our staff, and in 2014 with a one, two, three finish in the British Fish Craft Championships – there’s not much left that our proud team have to conquer!

Deliveries
We deliver to Hotels, Restaurants and Caterers throughout Cardiff, Newport, Swansea and the surrounding areas – including twice weekly deliveries to Bristol.
Our fleet of temperature controlled vehicles ensure your goods remain at the optimum temperature – reaching you in perfect condition.
We also deliver to private home customers in Cardiff, Penarth and the surrounding areas – please call us for more info on delivery days.
With the Market open Monday to Saturday 8am to 5.30pm we’re always available to help you get the best quality fresh fish, prepared by our award winning fishmongers!
For our trade customers we can prepare your order and deliver next day on our vehicles, even same day if you can get your order to us between 6am and 8am!
