E. Ashton Fishmongers
Our fish purchasing policy
At Ashton’s, we have been working to a responsible seafood sourcing strategy for many years and our suppliers must only source fish from fisheries or farmed aquaculture operations that are responsibly managed.
Our suppliers are all carefully selected because they fully adhere to our sustainability policy; we never buy endangered species or fish in the breeding season. We are constantly working with our suppliers to ensure that every fish, mollusc or crustacean that they supply can be fully traced back to its orginating fishery area.
We are committed to providing our customers with the information they need they need to make better purchasing decisions by labelling our fish with the species name and area of catch.
Our fish comes from ports all over the UK including the Faroe and Shetland Islands and our buyers are fanatical about quality and freshness. We also have buyers in the Rungis Market in Paris.
We have developed a robust system for evaluating fisheries, which incoroporate sustainability criterea and the impact of fishing methods on the wider marine environment.
This approach is currently is currently being independently verified by the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership.
In British ports, many of our fish wholesalers are using the Responsible Fishing Scheme that has been developed raise standards in the catching sector - enabling those within the seafood supply chain to demonstrate their commitment to the responsible sourcing of seafood. The aim is that over time, accreditation will become the condition of supply.
The vast majority of our imported fish comes from Le Lien Ltd who are committed to sustainability and quality. www.lelienltd.com
