Logs and kindling
There’s a wood burning stove in the cottage
and you’ll find logs, kindling, fire-lighters and
matches. We’ll leave you with sufficient logs
for your stay. If you need more, please let us
know (or help yourself to logs near the table
tennis table – there’s usually a small supply).
The firelighters and matches are on the shelf
in a marked box.
Wood burning stove
There’s a knack to using a wood burning stove
and if you’ve not used one before we’ll happily
give some advice. The key thing is not to
overload the stove and to get the air-flow right
so it burns gently and gives off lots of heat.
To lay the fire after clearing most of the ash
through to the tray beneath it is best to build a
small pyramid with a single firelighter at the
base, some tightly scrunched newspaper balls
on top and a few sticks pointing upwards
surrounding the paper. You can then perch a
small log on the top.
Open the air vents and light the paper. Close
the door and keep an eye on it. If it roars you
may need to reduce the airflow a little. It is
best not to put too many logs in at once
– just one or two is plenty.
Ash
You shouldn’t need to empty the ash unless
you have the stove going all week. Just scrape
it through to the tray beneath with the tools
provided. If you do need to empty the tray,
slide it out and wrap it in newspaper or use the
metal ash bin provided.
There’s a dustbin by the table tennis table
under the arch - please tip all ash in to this and
don’t use any of the plastic household bins for
ash.
If you’ve got questions on the best way to deal
with the wood burning stove and ash, just ask.
We’re here to help.
