Across all modes – road, rail, air, and sea – new
technologies and data systems are being developed
and integrated to drive remarkable outcomes. This is
being driven by the consumer need for data-
enriched services to make informed decisions, the
urgency to decarbonise and the push to remain
competitive as digital transformation sweeps our
economy at a staggering pace.
Transport faces a significant skills challenge, and the
opportunities will not be realised unless we have
enough engineers, data scientists, developers, and
technologists to make this change. This however will
prove difficult, with transport being a sector that has
very little interest from the next generation of
workers, very low female representation and a very
high retirement risk.
Transport & Logistics
Future Skills
Some new technologies will spill into other
sectors such as Agriculture which are a long way
to adopting hydrogen / methane farm
machinery coupled with smart GPS sensors and
automated systems.
Transport is integral within all Swansea
development initiatives.
Public transport struggle to recruit, yet jobs
within distribution and warehousing are filled
relatively easily. This is a concern when looking
at longer term automation processes for the
logistics and distribution sector.
Improving the job perception of public transport
roles and encouraging displaced distribution
roles into that sector would mitigate any
displacement that takes place through
automation.
