                                                   MOONLIGHT MILE

Russell Young utilizes materials that respond to the
elements. His inspiration for making large-scale abstract
works came while sitting under the pier near his studio
at the renowned Rincon point break in California. He
noticed how the interaction of natural elements on
the wood and metal resulted in a patina and range of
brown, green and orange hues. Creating this sculpture,
entitled Moonlight Mile, involved physical movement as
he painted thick enamel on the surface, and then drew
into it using iron powder. After it dried, he dragged the
sculpture into the Pacifi c Ocean and held it beneath the
waves. The rains of El Nino, wind, sun and sea air have
also changed the colour, texture and composition.
