Unit 1: You and Your Equipment 1.1: Eye of the Photographer
Seeing the world around you
You may wonder how you will be able to find unusual subjects—themes—in the everyday world around you.But as you develop your eye, you'll see that there are beautiful, striking images everywhere, whether you live in a big city, a small town, a suburb, or on a farm.
The Photographer's Eye is your new eye. Your world must become new to you.
The problem is that we’re all so familiar with our own family, friends, and neighborhoods that we tend not to see them anymore. It’s like the face on a twenty-dollar bill. When we see something so often, we tend to look past it.
What you must do is begin to see your neighborhood with the same sense of newness and strangeness that a tourist would have. You’ve got to start seeing the world around you again—your room, your home, your street, your place of work, your school, your family, your friends, your neighbors, your fellow workers, and your fellow students. See them as subjects for your camera.
The most beautiful photographs may be within a one-mile radius of where you're sitting right now.
