Chapter 1
The Most Fashionable New York Party: Mercer’s Owl’s Nest Event
“Oh please, please, please, let me be invisible. Let them not see me. Let me stop breathing.”
Mia’s mind was in a complete panic. She knew that these two very rich, powerful men must never know she had sneaked into the library because she wanted to see this mysterious and magnificent room filled with books and artifacts carefully laid out for display and wonderment.
She had to peek in, if only for a moment. She guessed as to the location of the library but then its door confirmed that it must be the library.
As she opened the door with tingling excitement, Mia never dreamed of such a room. She stepped in, closing the door softly behind her. This was heaven. It was living elegance with five or six thousand books, some of them original editions, on rich walnut shelves from floor to ceiling. To her left the wall displayed a magnificent fireplace with ornate carved woodwork on all sides and a wood-carved mural above it portraying lovely angels that seemed to be blissfully singing and playing with absolute joy. Of course, they were angels because this was God’s library. Next to the fireplace was a wonderful geographer’s globe, and then you reached a wrought-iron, spiral staircase leading to the second-level book gallery. The carvers of this wood were not ordinary men but
