Chapter 5 Manhattan
As the driver chatted happily in broken English, Mia’s inner voice began scolding and berating her. “You stupid, stupid girl, running away like a little kid. Your solution to everything. Better to run than face the consequences. You ran away on the first day of school in Grade One, and you keep running to this day.
“And Mia Christina Anna Taylor, why are you frightened anyway? Two men talking about who knows what. Just because Robert Mercer is as rich as God, and lives in a beautiful, but weird, estate on Long Island, you run like a frightened and meek servant. You did nothing wrong. You just wanted to feel, to see this grand room filled with the most precious books you had ever seen. A small indiscretion. Hardly a capital offence. Improper yes, but surely no jail time was attached. Only a stern word and a warning regarding her responsibilities.”
As silly as it sounded, she was still frightened by the way Mercer spoke, so cold, calculating, precise, as if every single word he uttered were filled with meaning beyond the word. As if each word were a door to a Pandora’s Box of action. “Think Mia. Think. What were the three words ‘contain, control’ no, no, no, it was ‘control, contain, or eliminate.’ They could mean nothing or everything.”
