Supporting Safety for Students of Diverse Gender and Sexual Orientations
Dr. Todd Savage, Professor of School Psychology, University of Wisconsin-River Falls (UWRF)
LGBTQ+ students constitute a vulnerable population when it comes to school safety, in general. Given the upheaval caused by the ongoing pandemic, an overall negative cultural climate toward LGBTQ+ persons in the moment, and the effects of recent racial unrest, LGBTQ+ students may be particularly vulnerable this school year. Thus, addressing LGBTQ+ student safety concerns in the coming months will require school personnel to apply a trauma informed approach; increasing access to mental health supports will also be necessary. As such, the specific objectives of this session are to... Understand LGBTQ+ student safety concerns in light of recent community crises; Consider ideas to reaffirm physical safety and psychological security as school; Consider ideas for identifying and addressing the mental health needs of LGBTQ+ students in school.
