READING
Word wall activities can be used to improve literacy by helping students build
vocabulary, improve spelling in written words, and explain ideas through oral communication.
They are able to provide some of the following;
• an approach to meaningful teaching of vocabulary with an emphasis on student
engagement
• build vocabulary, thereby improving reading comprehension and writing style
• help students improve spelling and awareness of spelling patterns
• provide visual cues for students
MATH
Word walls in math can provide visual cues and graphic representations of content. The
purpose of the mathematics word wall is to identify words and phrases that students need to
understand and use so as to make good progress in mathematics. ELL's are more likely to
make connections when they can go to the wall for help instead of having to ask others or the
teacher every time they have a question. It gives them an opportunity to find the answer on their
own and have them be more confident.
SOCIAL/SCIENCE
Science is a vocabulary-intense subject that is dependent on students learning new and
often times difficult vocabulary to increase comprehension and help them make connections
between and among concepts. When science students are given the opportunity to interact with
