Medical conceptual figures use specialized visual languages that have developed over decades and follow certain conventions. This put Gill in
a unique position who is not only familiar with
the medical conventions, but more importantly can comprehend these complex figures. This led to the development of her practice–led PhD thesis – Visual Elements and Visual Paradigms: Re–thinking scientific conceptual figures through graphic design.
