To get maximum efficiency out of working with concepts only works when the underlying knowledge base can be kept to a minimum and the concepts are sequenced developmentally, each one building on the previous one. As the learning gets increasing technical and the knowledge base becomes increasingly substantial, we run into the same problem again. BUT we can reduce the impact of this by introducing the knowledge in both text and video format. This is increasingly happening throughout the world, particularly at university level, where students are choosing not to attend lectures and they are watching the video of the lecture and rewind and re- watch the sections they were not sure of. No doubt students will also choose to fast-forward parts that are tedious and of little benefit.
Replacing text-based learning with video is happening at an increasing pace in almost all learning domains and we can expect this to increase as we need to learn with increasing efficiency and effectiveness.
Facebook will be ‘all video’ in 5 years
Speaking about the ‘decline of text’ at a conference this week, Facebook Vice-President Nicola Mendelsohn
caused a stir with her prediction that Facebook would be ‘all video’ within five years. Facebook can be thought of in much the same way, to an extent, only with influence over much more than the music industry. When asked at Fortune’s Most Powerful Women International Summit in London, where Facebook would be in a half decade in terms of mobile and video, Mendelsohn said the social network would ‘definitely’ be mobile, and would ‘probably’ be
‘all video’.

“If I was having a bet,” she said, “it’d be video, video, video.” Video content on Facebook, Mendelsohn said, is growing even more quickly than the company anticipated. And the social network’s new live video feature is also ‘a bigger, faster phenomenon’ than Facebook expected. Facebook users watch an average of 100 million hours of video on mobile every day. Daily views have increased from 1 billion to 8 billion in one year’s time. Text posts, meanwhile, are declining year on year, she said.105 Nicola Mendelsohn
This quote also applies to learning. Broadening how we access media other than reading and writing, would allow far greater success for far more learners. Why is listening to the pod cast or watching the video seen as a poor cousin to accessing and reading text? The same can be said for how learners present their work using multimedia as well as, or rather than writing/typing.
