The shift to far greater learner agency (responsibility), for learners over their learning and far greater accountability for their own assessment and the assessment of their peers changes the role of the teacher to one of educator-learner and the student to one of learner-educator.
The role of the educator now requires a higher level of understanding of how learning takes place and how we can maximise learning outcomes for learners that are in line with the needs of learners today; not last century.
If video is going to contend with reading and writing it will need to develop some of the nuance of books such as the equivalent of flicking through to find specific information, the ability to using bold and italics to highlight and accent specific knowledge and the ability to highlight or record notes in video on the fly. The complexity of video for learning is greater than that of video for entertainment and that work needs to be researched urgently.
Questions worth reflecting on:
1. How does this new approach to learning resonate with your ‘gut feeling’ as an educator?
2. What are your immediate concerns as you contemplate the implementation of the
transitions in educator practice that are now required?
3. What are your immediate resourcing challenges?
4. What are the implications for the technological environment(s) required in your classroom(s) to implement this approach to learning?
5. How do you feel about the notion of teachers becoming educator-learners and what cultural changes will this require of you?
6. How do you think these changes will affect community perceptions and the status of teachers/educator-learners within your community?
7. In what ways, do you believe this proposed revised approach to learning will better prepare learners for their world?
8. Considering your answers to the questions above, is the investment of your time and energy in making these changes, worthwhile? How do you justify your response?
9. What do you see as the most significant challenges in making these series of transitions over the next three years?
10. How do you feel about learners using multimedia as a format for building understanding and as a way of demonstrating their understanding either with or in the absence of text?
11. What will be your strategy when you communicate to your community about the changes that are taking place in their school?
12. What will be your first set of tasks that you will look at implementing when introducing these transitions within your school?
