NEWS FROM HOME
By Mhairi McLay (K 17)
This has been my first year as Corresponding Member for Cambridge University, having been handed the baton by Serena Shah (L 15). Serena stayed in Cambridge after graduation to work in alumni relations for Jesus College, but will be moving to the South to teach Music at Lancing College.
It is apparent from my contact with the various OOs at Cambridge that it has been a busy year in true Oundelian fashion. OOs have taken part in a multitude of activities – on the sporting fields, in theatre and chapels, as members of numerous societies and on college JCRs, while keeping up with Cambridge’s numerous lectures, supervisions, labs and reading.
The small size of Cambridge means that I often see familiar faces about town, not least within my college, St Catharine’s, where Ed Willey (Ldr 15) completed his final year and Lucy Purnell (D 16) has been responsible for running welfare events in her role as welfare representative.
I have also met up with Virginia Bernardi (W 17), who was international representative at Girton
College and has now taken up the role of welfare representative, whilst also finding time to write articles for the Varsity magazine.
You may have spotted Will Stewart (B 16) on your TVs, as he took part in University Challenge, representing Corpus Christi. The final outcome was unknown at the time of writing.
On the sporting front, Jeremy Manger (L 16) captained the Varsity rugby fives team and Downing College hockey side in his final year, when he was also President of Downing Sports Society and played college rugby; Emilia Broadbent (L 16) captained the successful Varsity women’s clay pigeon shooting second team; Pollyana Baker (L 16) competed in the Varsity triple jump event and played college lacrosse, but has now escaped Cambridge for her year abroad; and Laura Woodrow (N 16) was involved in mixed lacrosse in her final year.
Pippa Graves (K 16) took on organisational roles for both Robinson College’s FemSoc and their May Ball before heading off on her year abroad.
Molly-May Keston (Sn 16) continued her theatrical involvement as President of the Musical Theatre
Society and has been performing and directing in numerous shows while graduating in Law.
Matthew Gibson (S 15) appeared in frequent musical performances, either conducting, performing or singing as choral scholar for St John’s College.
Andrea Veronese (C 17) runs his college billiard society and will be completing a research internship with the Material Sciences department this summer.
I have thoroughly enjoyed my first year, both academically and socially. I have assumed the role of disabilities representative for my college JCR. As an ambassador for my college, I helped out during the interview process and even had an Oundelian checking in. I have completed tours of the college for prospective students and it was great to show Mr Peck and Miss Byatt (my A-level Biology teachers) along with their Quadrivium group around college during their trip to Cambridge.
Congratulations to all those who graduated and good luck in your future plans. Meanwhile, welcome to any new OOs starting at Cambridge in October.
